In the heart of Athens at Ermou 98 there is a place that feels like it has always been here. Familiar, warm and alive with the spirit of the city. Taverna Ermou brings back the soul of the classic Athenian taverna while giving it new life for today.
Back in the day the neighborhood taverna was where everything happened. People did not need a reason to stop by, they just came. Morning, afternoon or evening it was always open and always welcoming. Some came for a bite while others simply for the company. Tables filled slowly, food was shared without asking and wine flowed freely. This is the feeling we wanted to hold on to and recreate here.
The courtyard, the music and the easygoing atmosphere create a timeless setting. Recipes come straight from tradition and are revisited with care and respect. The menu leans toward the sea with dishes such as crispy fried cod with skordalia, Athenian salad with bottarga, sardines on the grill and octopus baked in the wood oven with fava. Alongside them you will find meze and comforting plates from the old city including tender meatballs, hand cut fries, stuffed vine leaves on the coals and simple pasta with onions, each one crafted as if lifted from well worn recipe notebooks.
Meals are meant to be shared and accompanied by carefully chosen wines from Greek producers, a chilled carafe of retsina or a glass of tsipouro. Every table should also finish with something sweet such as thick yogurt with honey and walnuts, spoon sweets or a slice of orange pie with ice cream.
